Like so many late-eighties shows, the boys are in full-on mind-meld form throughout this 1989 night, playing together perfectly. In the midst of this, Brent has a banner night, priming the pump alongside Jerry on a hot early-set Franklin's, rocking I Will Take You Home out of Space, and eviscerating Throwing Stones for one of the best versions ever. Check out this overlooked gem of a show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
15 years in, and the Grateful Dead were still playing high school gyms. Or, at least they were under the midnight sun in Alaska in 1980, beginning a three-day run that culminated in the solstice show. The boys are sharp and tight throughout this first night with Jed, Althea, and LL Rain standing out in the first set. Wide open jams are sparse in the second half outside the face-melting Drums> Space, but there are still a lot of treats, including a sweet Peggy-O and dark and murky Wharf Rat. Give it all a listen.
On this day in 1987, the Grateful Dead's Touch Of Grey video debuted on MTV. Soon, it would be in the regular MTV rotation, driving hordes of new fans to the band, transforming the culture. Watch the iconic Touch Of Grey video at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day back in 1976, the Dead opened the show with Help> Slip> Franklin's and saw the set out with a twenty-minute Playin'. The second half includes an unreal High Time and a Dancin'> Cosmic Charlie. And we have the video of it all. Check it out at Grateful Dead of the Day.
