On this day in 1974, the Dead played a rather short - only 2:20 - but oh so satisfying show. The crux of it all is the Truckin'> Eyes> Slipknot!> China Doll. The Truckin’ is monumental, descending into deep space before the Eyes suddenly pops out of the dark recesses, brightly lighting the scene and taking us on an effervescent journey that spills into the first ever Slipknot!. And what a debut it is, full of face-stealing, mind-melting magic. Out of that den of iniquity, China Doll bursts forth, overwhelming in its shear awesome power. But don't take our word for it, give the entire show a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On the solstice back in 1991, the Dead capped the first set with a stunning Bird Song. But it is the second half, with its searing Watchtower, majestic Standing on the Moon, and haunting Wharf Rat, that really steals the show. And the innovative setlist - a Throwing> Aiko second set opener with a Throwing reprise into NFA to close - along with the breathtaking Brokedown encore seals the deal. Give it all a listen.
On this day in 1992, Bruce returned as a guest for the first time after leaving the band back in March. The Dead also break out Casey Jones, which was last played in 1984. And, they deliver a sweet Baba O'Reilly> Tomorrow Never Knows encore. Check it all out on crisp video at Grateful Dead of the Day.
