On this day back in 1973, the boys put up a heady as all get out show for the ages. A Sugaree, LL Rain, Row Jimmy triple shot along with an inimitable China> Rider and capping Playin' highlight the first set. But all of that might be overshadowed by the meat of the second set. After a soaring He's Gone and a raging Truckin', the boys laid down nearly twenty minutes of mind-bending jamming before an Other One> Space> Other One segues into a Wharf Rat> Sugar Mags. All told, the night was one of the best shows of 1973, which is saying quite a bit indeed. Listen to it all at Grateful Dead of the Day.
From an island in the middle of the Susquehanna River, the Dead sent out a dazzling second set on this day in '83. Things take off with a euphoric China>Rider that flows into a juicy, inventive Playin'. Then, a Spanish Jam, taking place in a remote alien landscape, consumes Space, before shape-shifting into a powerful Miracle. On the heels of all that, we get a superb Stella> GDTRFB> NFA to see the set out before an always welcome Brokedown encore. Fire it up and give it a listen.
And slip back in time to the Deadhead scene at that City Island show back in 1983 by way of this local news report on the show.
