The late, great Robert Hunter, lyricist to the Grateful Dead and long-time Jerry collaborator and friend, came into this world on this day in 1941. Read our bio of the man and "celebrate him the way you all know how, by being together and listening to the music. Let there be songs to fill the air."
In front of a packed Autzen Stadium in Eugene, the Dead delivered a seriously heady night of music on this day in 1990. With an Eyes second set opener, a classic Playin'> UJB> Playin', and a monster closing Morning Dew, the boys brought it and then some. Listen to the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On a tropical summer evening in Miami, the Dead put up one of their best shows of that stand-out year, 1974. During the early going, we get the band's only rendition of Let It Rock and a best-ever To Lay Me Down before WRS> China Doll takes it into set break. A searching, contemplative jam opens the second half, finding its way to a stunning Ship of Fools. But the monumental Dark Star with a Spanish Jam that smoothly transitions - you gotta hear it to believe it - into US Blues is the real meat of the latter going. Give it all a listen.
At Star Lake Amphitheater back in 1992, the Dead opened with Help> Slip> Franklin's and played a stellar Standing On The Moon. But the highlight might be the absolutely top-shelf So Many Roads. But don't take our word for it, watch it all.
