Though the first set from today’s show in 1974 is scintillating, topped by a delightful Weather Report Suite. Yet the real magic here is in the second half. There the Dead played what is arguably the best China> Rider ever and then went on to deliver a tight and tasty Truckin'> Other One> Spanish Jam> Wharf Rat> Sugar Mags. But it is easy to make the case that the stand-alone Eyes encore takes the cake on this night. Listen to it all at Grateful Dead of the Day and make up your own mind.
Cheering and hooting throughout the evening, the crowd is so psyched to have the Dead back in Chicago after the hiatus on this day in '76. The crux of the night is surely the exuberant and joyous Playin' which births a delightful laid-back and free-flowing Stephen> Wheel before drifting back into a meaty Playin'. But the scintillating Crazy Fingers before a dark and deeply emotional, top-flight Stella is not to be missed either. Take in the spaciousness and splendor of the Hunter Seamons's matrix or any of our other recordings of this show.
A thirteen-year-old Chelsea Clinton, together with some teenybopper friends and a phalanx of Secret Service agents, attended the show at RFK on this day in 1993. Backstage at the show, Chelsea ended up hanging with Jerry and Bobby, but not before she was accosted by Bear. Read all about Chelsea's Dead experience at Grateful Dead of the Day.
