On this day back in 1985, the Dead broke through the tried and true, putting up some groundbreaking versions, including a Shakedown for the ages, a jazzy and driving Other One (intro-ed by a rare 80s Cryptical), and a set-closing Sugar Mags that will make you think anew about the old standard. Once again, the boys proved that they were never too old to learn some new tricks, keeping the audience on their toes and leaving us in awe some thirty-five years later. What's more, we have another tasty matrix from the night. Give it all a listen on this glorious day.
The Dead dedicated the show on this day in 1979 to Lowell George of Little Feat, who had passed away the night before, just a year after he had produced the Shakedown Street album. But the band went beyond that, eulogizing their comrade with a heartfelt He's Gone and playing a fantastic, charged show at the Portland International Raceway. Listen to the show and read more about George and the Dead, including their coke filled first meeting at Front Street.
