On the campus of UCSB, the Dead threw down a monster 1978 gem. From the voracious and ripping Bertha opener, you know it is on, and the boys never let up. A late-seventies Estimated> Eyes masterpiece and a charging, Harley-fueled NFA> GDTRFB are the obvious highlights, but every song is extraordinary. Sit back and give a listen to the entire show.
The band is on fire throughout the first set, highlighted by Peggy-O and Lazy Lightning> Supplication. Things get even hotter in the second, though, starting with a powerful Samson and, a few songs later, a dreamy Eyes. But the Terrapin> Playin’> Franklin’s is the crux, building and unfolding worlds heretofore unimagined with a perfectly magical transition between Playin’ and Franklin’s. On top of that, China Doll emerges, bursting with eerie melancholy and sadness before the headlong emotional release of NFA> Playin’. In the end, this is "just" another fabulous night during the incredible Spring '77 tour. Give it all a listen.
