From that bastion of incredible '90s shows, Deer Creek, the Dead delivered a stunner on this day in 1991. The first set is off the charts with an impassioned Jack Straw, achingly beautiful They Love Each Other, and a heavenly Cassidy. The second half is no slouch either, highlighted by a cacophonous Watchtower into a moving Stella Blue. Listen to the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
At the Fillmore on this date in 1969, Jerry showed up late, and Bill Graham sent the Dead on stage with another guitarist, probably Wayne Ceballos, in his stead. Thus, the first five tunes, including a raging Smokestack with Pig as a boss on harp and vocals, is Jerry-less. But the master arrives in time for a tumultuous, throw-down Lovelight that, at 47 minutes, is quite possibly the longest version the Dead ever played. Bobby and Phil's banter and the entire casual nature of the affair make clear just what laid-back community gatherings the Fillmore shows were as late as summer '69. And the entire night - not least the Lovelight - is a joy to listen to. Head on over.
