The Dead busted open Summer Tour at Cal Expo on this day in 1990. In the first half, Brent dazzles on Easy to Love You, and Bird Song shoots off into ethereal space. Uncle John's opens the second set, while Bobby and the boys deliver a powerful Estimated a bit later. Nearing the end of the show, Jerry nearly overwhelms the audience with his sick licks and poignant vocals on Black Peter. But don't take our word for it, listen to the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The bookend shows of the final three-night stand of Spring ’77 get most of the attention, but the middle show from this day is every bit as brilliant. A palpably smooth Sugaree, silky Jack-A-Roe, and ferocious Lazy Lightning> Supplication rise above in the early going. But things get absolutely stratospheric in the second half with a sensational Estimated> Eyes> Drums> Other One> Wharf Rat> NFA> GDTRFB, all capped by a Brokedown encore. And, what’s more, we get to enjoy it on a beautiful, crispy matrix from Hunter Seamons. Listen to the entire show.
Closing out a four-night run at the Fillmore on this day in 1969, the Dead got too dosed to play. As Phil describes, "While waiting for our set...we were passed an innocuous-looking (except for the faint subliminal glow emanating from the liquid, and the barely noticeable sediment at the bottom) bottle of – apple juice! Without any hesitation, we each sampled the bottle and passed it on. As soon as that juice hit my taste buds, my entire consciousness went into “oh shit” mode – I had never experienced the taste of acid like that before." Read more and check out the show, including the last New Potato Caboose and a top-shelf Dancin' in the Streets.
With Jerry and Bobby too dosed to take the stage in the second set on this day back in 1969, Elvin Bishop, the blues virtuoso, came on to share lead vocals with Pigpen on two tunes. Read more about Elvin Bishop and his connections with the Dead and listen to the shows that he guested on.
