Back on this day in 1969, the Dead began their first set by blasting into a Cryptical, sparking what is arguably the best Other One suite ever. The Touch of Grey opener is emblematic of the show itself: bright, fun, and well-played. And there are so many other nuggets: the Let It Grow with Mickey and Billy’s powerful drumming, Jerry’s buoyant, intricate guitar work, and Bobby's vivacious vocals; Brent’s keys and Jerry’s guitar lighting up a Scarlet Begonias before an all-round effort on a top-shelf Fire On The Mountain; a haunting Black Muddy River.
