On this day in 1981, the boys played Madison Square Garden, a place hallowed in Dead history. On this occasion, they added to the legacy with a hot Half-Step> Franklin's, a rocking Scarlet> Fire, and a monumental China Doll, all in the midst of a stellar early 80s show. Listen to it all at Grateful Dead of the Day and read some crazy Dead jokes - Lesh as Colonel Cunnilingus, for example - that are not really related to this particular show, but hysterical nonetheless.
This middle show of a three-night run at the Rosemont just outside Chicago cooks all the way through from the Stranger opener to the Baby Blue encore. But it is the post-Space magic, especially an epic Standing On The Moon, that cements this show as one of the best of 1993. Take it in and judge for yourself at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Happy birthday to Edie Brickell! Check out the story of her time with the Dead and the plans that Jerry and her hatched - that sadly never came to pass - to start an all improv band.
