On this day in '81, gate crashers, insane weather, and police in riot gear greeted the Dead in the City that God Forgot, but the boys played a phenomenal show nonetheless, beginning with a rocking Shakedown that sends the crowd into a frenzy. There is a relentless, blistering Music Never Stopped, a stellar Estimated> Eyes, and a beautiful, yet heartrending Wharf Rat. Listen to it all at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The energy builds as the first set unfolds, peaking with a fiery Minglewood Blues and Deal that feature Matt Kelly on harmonica. The second is blissful magic from the get-go as the boys deliver a Music Never Stopped> Franklin's Tower> Estimated Prophet> Spoonful before Drums and Ollin Arageed with Hamza El Din. Trust us, you are not going to want to miss that run. Check it out at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day in 2008, we lost the great saxophonist Martin Fierro. Besides sitting in with the Dead throughout the fall 1973 East Coast tour, playing on Wake of the Flood, and adding his horn to Legion of Mary, Martin became an early member of Steve Kimock's Zero, cementing his status in jam band history. Celebrate Fierro's life by reading more about him and his time with the Dead while listening to his contributions on one of those fall '73 shows.
