Sharing the bill with the Airplane, the Dead delivered a compact psychedelic masterpiece on this day in ‘68, leading off with a Dark Star and never looking back. During the Caution, Phil zoned out in a fit of mourning for Neal Cassady, leading Jerry to - no shitting - push Phil down the stairs backstage. Listen to the entire show and hear Jerry talk about the incident at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Phil and Jerry crack open today’s 1973 show like a pair of pied pipers, leading the children into a magical China> Rider, the segue including a Feeling Groovy jam for the first time. But it is the mind-blowing Bird Song, perhaps a tribute to Pig who had passed the week before, and ranging Playin' that end the first set that are the highlights of the early going. And the second half is all the match for the early going, capped by a bewitching, ethereal Dark Star into a subdued, almost reflective Truckin' and a dark and moody Morning Dew that is not to be missed. Don't sleep on this one.
This video of Jerry and the boys delivering a righteous Scarlet Begonias> Fire On The Mountain on this day in 1992 will make you smile, smile, smile! Get that grin on at Grateful Dead of the Day.
