A very happy birthday to Tom Constanten! TC played with the band from 1968 through to the 1970 New Orleans bust and contributed to both Anthem of the Sun and Aoxomoxoa with his keys and experimental avant-garde sensibility. Celebrate TC, read more about him, and listen to some of his best shows in our bio at Grateful Dead of the Day.
How about a first set that ends with an Estimated> Terrapin> Playin'> Samson> Playin'? This show has all that and more, including an Eyes second set opener and a Franklin's> Sugar Mags rocker to close it out early in the boys' magical '77 campaign. Listen to the entire show and read more about Winterland, the Dead's defacto home during the seventies, at Grateful Dead of the Day.
A rowdy Hell In A Bucket and Bertha provide a double shot of adrenaline to kick the 1990 show off. A rich and ebullient Jack-A-Roe and ferocious Deal also highlight the first set. But it is, unsurprisingly, the second half that takes the cake with a Box Of Rain opener, arguably best ever Foolish Heart, and a rousing Playin' that then wends through fractious space into a fast and furious Eyes, all before a precious and beautiful China Doll out of Space. Listen to all the magic.
The breakout of Unbroken Chain on this day in 1995 was a truly special moment in Dead history. Chris Todt, who was there for it at the Spectrum, shares his story of the show on the Heads' Tales podcast.
