The Europe ’72 tour began on April 7th, but the boys played a preparatory seven-night run at the Academy of Music in NYC in the days leading up to their flight across the pond. Check out the opening night of that shockingly awesome week-long stand, including an utterly incredible Other One, the first really jammed out Playing in the Band, and so many other great versions; it will blow your socks off. Listen to the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Throughout the Blues for Allah sessions, the Dead were creating a new sound, which was darker and more melancholy, attempting to comprehend and manipulate time itself. On this day in '75 - a practice studio jam session - the boys seem to be plumbing the heart of it as they prepared for the SNACK benefit two days later. Of special interest are the middle three tracks where the band jams Stronger than Dirt into and out of Blues for Allah. The interplay between Jerry and Phil stands out, particularly, as they create some intricately intertwined jams. Listen to the entire practice session.
The last time the Dead played Stir It Up was back on March 26, 1988, when they actually gave the vocals a shot. Here the band shelves the lyrics and lusciously jams out Bob Marley's tune. Head over to Grateful Dead of the Day to check out the video of the rare Stir It Up Jam from this day in 1991.
