In the middle of a 1988 three-show run at Hampton, the boys served up a scrumptious night of music. After a first set that includes a To Lay Me Down breakout, Bobby has some guitar issues to open the second. In his absence, the rest of the band dials up a spacey jam into a Miles Davis tease. Then Bobby runs out and immediately fires away with a rocking Sugar Mags, which is followed up by Scarlet> Fire and Estimated> Eyes. Check out the breathless excitement of the second set and listen to the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day in ’72, the Dead were at the Academy of Music in New York, firing on all cylinders and deep into their seven night tune-up for the European tour. Pigpen puts on a display, throwing down on It Hurts Me Too, Big Boss Man, Good Lovin’, and the absolutely righteous Two Souls in Communion. But don’t miss the Playin’, which is one of the first with Donna and so hot. Give the entire show a listen and get ready for Europe ’72.
Comes A Time was a rare treat in the 90s. And this one is as good as any with Jerry's ragged voice setting off the lyrics and his incredible solos lighting it up. Check this 1993 rendition out on video at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day in 1973, Jerry and Hunter were driving between gigs when they got pulled over in Jersey for speeding. When Jerry opened his briefcase to get his license, the trooper spied a bag of weed, leading to his arrest. Read more about the bust, including what the search turned up in our post about the events.
