Truckin' has the boys rushing out of the gate on this day in 1985, and they never look back, taking it into a fierce Smokestack Lightning with Matt Kelly on harp before tearing through an inimitable China> Rider, a heady Scarlet> Fire, and a downright feverish Sugar Mags. The Dead always seemed to scorch Nassau, and they do it again on this superb evening. You can listen to to the show and read more about the Dead's history at Nassau at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Dead played a luminous gem of a show on this date back in 1969. Pig balls on Schoolgirl and Lovelight, Jerry serves up crystalline goosebump-inducing runs in Dark Star, and the entire second set is just one big, utterly delightful Other One suite. This is spring ’69 at its heady peak! Put the entire show in your ears!
This show has been available on video for a long time. But if you have not checked out Christopher Hazard's remaster of it, you haven't really seen the show in its fully glory. And this Althea is, arguably, the highlight of the night. Watch it now at Grateful Dead of the Day.
