One of the most epic shows in Grateful Dead history went down on this day in 1990 as Branford Marsalis made his first appearance alongside the boys. A deep connection formed immediately between Branford, Jerry, and the rest of the band, producing a magical night of music, particularly the transcendent Bird Song, Eyes, and Dark Star. Listen to the entire show and read more about Branford's time with the band at Grateful Dead of the Day. And even if you have listened to this show before, you probably have never had the pleasure of watching it. And Christopher Hazard provides us with a remastered version of the original Peanut Productions source. Feast your eyes and ears on all the action at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Dead are at their psychedelic apogee as they roll into the Ice Palace, a skating rink not far from the Vegas Strip, for a shared bill with Santana and local band Free Circus on this day back in 1969. The boys crush the set, including a powerful Morning Dew, Schoolgirl and Lovelight, and Dark Star> Saint Stephen> Eleven. Head over to Grateful Dead of the Day, take in the lysergic brilliance, and imagine seeing the Dead when the mob still controlled Vegas.
Happy birthday to long-time Deadhead and Blues Traveler frontman John Popper. To celebrate, read more about Popper and listen to the one show in which he shared the stage with the Grateful Dead.
