From Grateful Dead of the Day
Pigpen - "the heart and soul of the Grateful Dead," according to Jerry - passed away on this day in 1973. Read more about Pig and celebrate his life by listening to some of his best performances.
Three years to the day before Pigpen passed away, he played a phenomenal show with the Grateful Dead. Late in the show, in the midst of a lowdown, soulful Katie Mae, someone jumped up from the crowd and started jamming with the band, only to be followed by some fifty or so more folks over the course of the rest of the show. At it was at that 1970 show that Vince Welnick saw his first Dead show, some 20 years before becoming a member of the band. Read more about Vince and his many contributions to the Dead.
Bruce Hornsby would leave the Dead later in the month, playing his last regular show on March 24th at Auburn Hills. But he is still on stage and making his presence felt and goading Jerry on here at the Cap Centre on March 8th.
