On this day in 1985, the Dead delivered a sweet night of music, including a rare China Cat> Cumberland that is bubbling with effervescence. There's also an exuberant Other One> Wheel> Sugar Mags. This was just the fourth show - and first Bertha - since Jerry's drug bust. The Frets Magazine cover photo, including the white powder on Jerry's chest, was shot on January 12th, just six days before the arrest. Listen to the entire show and read about the circumstances of the Dead's intervention, Jerry's bust, and the Frets interview at Grateful Dead of the Day.
This 1981 show takes a few song to gather momentum. But once it does - certainly by the fantastic Deep Elem Blues - hold on tight. Everything from then on - Bird Song, Minglewood, China> Rider, Uncle John's, and The Other One> Stella, among others - is such top-shelf material, the cream of the early 80s. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Our Heads’ Tales guest and MSG connoisseur, Max Wiener, wants you to know that the Deep Elem Blues that the Dead played in the hallowed confines of the Garden on this day in 1981 is something special. Give the song and Max's interview a good listen.
Happy birthday to the great Indian tabla player and longtime friend of Mickey and the rest of the boys, Zakir Hussain. To celebrate, read about Zakir's time on stage with the Dead and jamming with Jerry as a teenager.
