On what is arguably the most adventurous and best night of the 1972 European tour, the Dead start off with a luscious Playin' and never look back, breaking out the first Morning Dew of the year and sending out the last full Caution ever. But it is the Dark Star, replete with textured multi-level spacey jams that really takes the evening. Still, we cannot help but mention Pig's phenomenal rapping on Good Lovin' and his beautiful Two Souls in Communion. Give this amazing night a careful listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Despite an eleven-song first set, a ferociously brilliant Fire on the Mountain, and a Stranger> Terrapin> Playin', the boys might have saved the best for the end on this day in 1980. There, a hypnotic and searching Black Peter takes it out of Space before the band rocks through GDTRFB> Around and Around> Johnny B Goode on their way to a magnificent Brokedown encore. The Dead always delivered in Maine, and this show from the Portland Civic Center scorches. Check it out.
Any video of the Dead in the 60s is stunning. And this one is no exception, providing over four minutes of a stellar opening Morning Dew. Take in the raw splendor of the Dead, outside on the campus of UCSD in 1969, over at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Dead played a tremendous disco funk version of Dancin' In The Streets on this day in 1978. Read more about the song and listen to some of the very best of the Dead's Dancin' In The Streets performances.
