On this day in 1981, the Dead paid tribute to Bob Marley, who had passed away the night before, with a powerful He's Gone. The show also saw a tremendous Althea and a full throttle, dangerous sort of Other One coming out of Space, after which the band shifted gears into a haunting Wharf Rat. Listen to it all at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Back in '79, the Dead headlined the University of Massachusetts's annual Spring Concert, taking the stage in mid-afternoon after Roy Ayers and Patti Smith played. The ferocious Minglewood and utterly fantastic Stagger Lee highlight the first set while a thrilling Samson, magisterial Terrapin, and Playin', replete with a beautiful spacey jam , are not to be missed in the second half. There is also an irrepressible, disco-fied Shakedown into One More Saturday Night for the encore. Give it all a listen and read about the Harley that roared into the show.
