On a beautiful day in 1983, the Dead debuted Hell in a Bucket and finished off the first set with top-shelf versions of Bird Song and Let It Grow. Putting his mark on the show, Brent played tremendously throughout, even filling in for Bobby on China Cat. But it is the twenty-minute Eyes that is the real crux of the show. Listen to all the music at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The first set on this night in Chicago is a marvel of perfection, kicking off with a bright and lively Music Never Stopped, winding through a flawless Ramble On Rose and Cassidy, and finishing off with an indelible Scarlet> Fire. The second half has its moments as well, including a smoking Other One into an immaculate Stella. No doubt, the band had a great time, kicking things off with a skit (calling Dr. Beechwood, calling Dr. Shot) and adding lots of banter throughout. Take in another show from that illustrious spring tour of 1977.
Escaping out a second-floor window after they had to cancel their scheduled show in Lille a week earlier during Europe ‘72, the band howled that they would be back to play a free show. And this day is the Dead making good on the promise - one of our finest 'music for the people' moments, as Phil has said - playing before students and townsfolk in the city's central square. Listen to the incredible music, read more about the experience, and just imagine taking in this incredible show in the center of Lille.
