On a glorious southern spring day back in 1977, the boys stormed the University of Alabama with some very fine music, including a first set ending Scarlet> Fire and a Terrapin> Playin'> Drums> Wharf Rat> Playin'. Listen to more of the magic of May '77 at Grateful Dead of the Day.
In just the third show with the Wall of Sound, it takes the band a couple of tunes to get the mix right. But when they do, the Dead set off on a romping run of efficient '74 perfection. The Playin', China> Rider, and final 45 minutes of Truckin> Nobody's Fault But Mine> Eyes> China Doll> Sugar Mags reach the greatest heights, but the rest is all superb, except maybe the first ever Money Money.
