On this day in 1970, the Dead made their first appearance in Europe, playing the Hollywood Festival at Newcastle-under-Lyme. Like a band on a mission, Pig strutted, balled, and fronted like no other, and Jerry blew away the crowd with his face-melting guitar. If the Dead had not converted the European crowd already, they ensured everyone got on the bus with a monumental Dark Star> Stephen> NFA> Lovelight to close out the set. Give the entire set a listen and read more about the festival at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Pigpen delivered his last Lovelight on this night at London's Strand Lyceum. And though you have to go to the bonus tracks from Rockin' the Rhein to get that tune, the crisp but clipped soundboard that we have cued up at Grateful Dead of the Day proves that this show was all the match of the rest of Europe '72. Listen to the powerful Other One and rare and funky Rockin' Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu now.
May 24, 1969, found the Dead at the second day of the Big Rock Pow-Wow on Seminole land in Florida. Pig primes the crowd with his sordid, uninhibited rapping on Lovelight while the boys lay down a raucous experimental sound, as licentious in its own way as Pig’s efforts. A technicolor China Cat> Eleven and a primal, pristine Alligator makes way for a blistering Stephen into a truly epic Feedback jam. Take all this in and more at Grateful Dead of the Day.
