The Dead played at a country western bar on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon, on this day in 1969. A reporter from Rolling Stone was in the audience, and his prose description of the proceedings is not to be missed. But it is the music itself that is the real treat, including a soaring Dark Star and a Pig-fronted, bawling Lovelight. Listen to the entire show and read all of the Rolling Stone's take on the night at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Dead played more than 2300 shows over their thirty years. And while legendary shows abound, what might be all the more incredible is just how extraordinary the music was on an average night for the band. As Deadheads well know, they melted faces day in and day out. And this show in Milwaukee is just another one of those evenings. The boys flat-out rock Franklin's, raise goosebumps during Althea, and just will not relent through the masterful Scarlet>Fire, to say nothing of the rest of the magnificent night. You could do a lot worse than firing it up and basking in the glory of what was just another inimitable Grateful Dead concert.
