The Dead put up the second longest Scarlet> Fire ever on this day in 1979, and it was a doozy, including freaky, alien jamming during the second half of Scarlet and a driving, mouth-watering beat throughout Fire. Beyond that combo, the boys are all dealing throughout the night with Brent really putting his mark on the show. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On the final night of the 1990 European tour - and what would end up being the last Dead show outside North America - the band repeatedly delivers. A rare version of Bruce's Stander On The Mountain caps the excellent first set, and the second starts off with a spine-chilling Victim before an oh-so-satisfying Playin'> Dark Star> Drums> Bruce piano jam> Dark Star Playin'. And you can bet there is so much more to enjoy. Listen to all of this special night.
Head over to Grateful Dead of the Day and you can also watch a remastered video of that final 1990 night in Europe, from Wembley Arena in London.
On this day in 1971, Jerry and Howard Wales's album, Hooteroll? was released, which featured Martin Fierro on sax. Jerry first met Fierro a few years earlier, but working together on the album brought them back together and ultimately led to the Fierro joining the Dead on Wake of the Flood and the fall 1973 tour. Read more about the saxophonist and listen to some of those '73 shows over on Grateful Dead of the Day.
