1973 was a very fine year, and this show is the cream of that turn around the sun. The crux of the show is an epic Dark Star> Mind Left Body> Eyes> China Doll. The Dark Star is mind-meltingly cosmic with that righteously groovy Mind Left Body Jam entering into a jazz-driven Eyes before the breathtaking, heartrending China Doll comes forth. Sit down, kick back, and put this gem of a show on right now at Grateful Dead of the Day.
A rare version of Rufus Thomas's Walkin' the Dog opens the show on this day in ‘85 before an uncharacteristically early Deal. And the boys continue to tear it up from there with a fabulous first set highlighted by the trio of Big River, Bird Song, and LL Rain. And the boys don't disappoint in the latter half either, taking Scarlet into a capacious Fire, playing a rich and varied Eyes, and bringing Dear Mr. Fantasy - Jerry and Brent in full effect - out of Space. Give a listen to it all on Hunter Seamon's matrix or any of the other sweet recordings.
And while we don't quite have the full video here, this does capture the entirety of the first set from that 1985 show, including the Walkin’ the Dog opener, Bird Song and Althea, along with the Scarlet> Fire, Estimated> Eyes that opened the second half, making this video worth checking out!
The Dead played Saturday Night Live for the first time on this day in 1978, delivering fairly standard renditions of Casey Jones, I Need A Miracle, and Good Lovin'. While we don't have the tapes of this one (NBC's copyright and all), we do have a little more write up and a link to the video on Amazon over at the site.
