On this day in 1985, a fiery Hell in a Bucket takes it out of the gate with Bobby cheesing out to maximum effect. An effervescent Althea, beautiful Sugaree, and face-melting Let It Grow also highlight the first set. In the second, a monster, inventive Estimated, rich with heavy Healey effects, leads the way into a tasty Eyes. There is also a powerful Dew and a lovely Brokedown encore. Listen to it all at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day in 2005 in what became known as the Thanksgiving Massacre, Archive.org, at the band's request, made all the recordings of the Grateful Dead inaccessible for streaming and download. Rancor from Deadheads followed, especially as Bobby spoke in support of the action, saying the online listening and trading was costing the Dead revenue. Fortunately, nine days later, the cornucopia of Dead music was once again made available. Read the whole story of the ill-advised move at Grateful Dead of the Day.
