On this day in 1991, the Dead played at the Laughter, Love, and Music celebration held in memory of Bill Graham. It was a long day of music with CSNY, Santana, Tracy Chapman, Journey, and several others along with a moving eulogy by Robin Williams. The festive atmosphere - some estimates have the crowd at half a million - and spontaneous nature of the whole thing harkened back to some of the great happenings of the sixties in the same locale. At different points in the Dead's set, John Popper, John Fogerty, and Neil Young all joined the boys on stage for a fitting tribute. Listen to the entire show and read more about the day.
Listen to the Dead - actually credited as The Emergency Crew - at their most primordial on this 1965 studio recording. With four originals, including an incredible Caution with Pig's leading harmonica and bawling vocals, and two covers - beautiful harmonies on I Know You Rider and Phil's vocals on Early Morning Rain - this music is not to be missed. Take it in now and read more about the session.
Bill Graham's memorial was another gathering of the tribes in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The Dead were the centerpiece of the affair. But that did not stop John Popper, John Fogerty, and Neil Young from joining the boys on a few tunes. Head over to Grateful Dead of the Day and check out all the action in this exceptional remastered video.
As we have said, at the Bill Graham memorial, John Popper took the stage with his heroes, the Grateful Dead. Read more about Popper and his experiences with the Dead.
