Pig was away caring for an ailing girlfriend, but the boys still put on a tremendous show on this day in '68. The Dark Star that opens is all milky smoothness with Phil throwing in some chunky bass lines, Bobby streaking around in the middle distance, the drummers ratcheting the lusciousness up, and Jerry soaring off repeatedly. At only thirteen minutes, it is a fairly short version, but there is nothing missing - except Pig - from the ethereal goodness of it all. And the show just goes on from there in pure primal form. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
In the midst of a five show run at Brendan Byrne Arena in Jersey, Jerry and Bobby hopped over to the big city to jam with Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band on NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman. They played a nice little rendition of Smokey Robinson’s I Second That Emotion and ever so briefly chatted with Dave about Built to Last and their current tour. Check out the video at Grateful Dead of the Day.
