On the second 1981 European tour, after their shows in France were cancelled, the Dead announced from the stage in Russelheim, Germany, that they would do two low-key shows back at the Milky Way club in Amsterdam. With their equipment already in transit to the next set of gigs, the boys played on borrowed instruments. The first night was great, but the next - today's show - blew the doors completely off. This is bar band Dead at its best with Bobby - on his birthday - cheesing out in awesome style. Check out the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Capping a five-show southern swing, the Dead get a little too close to New Orleans on Bobby's birthday, playing on the campus of LSU just up the road in Baton Rouge. What ensues is another magic '77 evening with a 17-minute Sugaree, Scarlet> Fire, and Terrapin> Black Peter providing just some of the highlights. Click on over and give it a listen.
Released to theaters in 1977, The Grateful Dead Movie, which captured the band's then final five-night run at Winterland in 1974 is a Deadhead classic of the highest order. Check it out or, more likely, give it yet another viewing.
Touring Europe in 1981, the Dead decided to make a run back to Amsterdam during a couple day break in their schedule. Besides the inevitable debauchery, the trip resulted in two incredible, impromptu shows on borrowed instruments at the intimate Club Melk Weg. Check it out here on this exquisite remastered video.
Back in 1974, the Dead began what was to be there final run. Don was there for all five shows and shares his experiences on this episode of the Heads' Tales podcast. Check it out.
