On this day in that epic year of 1977, the boys broke out both Casey Jones and Dupree's after, respectively, a three- and eight-year hiatus. They also delivered a monster Playin' before going completely over the top with The Wheel> Truckin’> Other One> Wharf Rat> Sugar Mags. It is pure, scorching madness, especially that inimitable segue between Truckin’ and The Other One. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day back in 1981, the Dead opened a four-day stand at the Rainbow Theater in London, just a night into their 14-show European tour. And this is a sensational evening of music, including the gooey, fully jammed out Minglewood, incredible Althea, and exquisite Sailor> Saint in the first set. The magic continues in the second half with a rare Playin'> Shakedown that continues on into a full-throttle Bertha. A lucid and beautiful Spanish Jam is also on offer before a Black Peter replete with a stratospheric jam at its end. Give the entire show a listen and appreciate this often overlooked tour.
Here we have complete and remastered video of a super sweet show from that great comeback year of 1987. Check it out in all its glory!
On this day in 2007, Mickey's Global Drum Project album, that would eventually win a Grammy, was released. Read more about Zakir Hussain, who played tabla on much of the album, sat in with the Dead, and jammed with Jerry as a teenager.
