What we have here is a shot of unadulterated primal Dead from the Greek back in ’68. And it is as face-melting as you can possibly imagine. After a Pig-fronted Schoolgirl and Lovelight, a tempestuous Dark Star comes forth, followed up by a breakneck Stephen and a fully mind-altering Eleven, all before a steam-rolling Caution and Feedback jam take the show out. This is some crazy shit of the first order. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Beset by spiraling expenses and feeling stifled musically, the Dead decided to call it quits back in 1974. And this show was supposed to be the last of the Grateful Dead. Take it all in and give thanks that is not what came to pass.
The Grateful Dead Movie, from the last shows before the hiatus in '74, is a treasured classic for all Deadheads. Treat your eyes to another viewing.
On this day in '74, the Dead played what was to be their last show. And Don Defenderfer was in the audience, as he was for so many Bay Area shows during the 70s. Listen to his tales of life with the Dead in this episode of the Heads' Tales podcast.
