The Dead headed across the pond two different times in 1981, the second of which was a tour that included this little gem from the Rainbow Theater in London. Fast and furious throughout the first set, the boys start off with Jack Straw, play a hell of a spaghetti western El Paso, throw in a "London phillies" reference in Minglewood, and finish with top-shelf versions of Row Jimmy, Let It Grow, and Deal. The second half is quite a match for the first, including a Brent-fueled Cold Rain & Snow opener and a Scarlet> Fire that Jerry scorches. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day in 1970, Janis Joplin passed away while the Dead shared a Winterland bill with Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service at what Bill Graham had advertised as Quicksilver's retirement party. There is no indication anyone on stage or in the audience knew about what had transpired in Los Angeles, but those listening and watching on KQED's and KSAN's first-ever quadraphonic simulcast of the concert, allowing people to listen and watch from home with unprecedented sound quality, did get the news. The Dead's set is a bit uneven, but Phil is exceptional, undergirding the highlights: Cold Rain and Snow, China> Rider, and Good Lovin'. The band also played the second - and perhaps the best of the six they did in total - Till the Morning Comes. Give the Dead's set a listen and read more about the evening, including the free shrooms that were being passed out.
