Billed as "Formerly the Warlocks" and only ticketed locally, the Dead's show on this day in 1989 at Hampton was a Deadhead's dream. And, of course, the boys reveled in the atmosphere, breaking out Help> Slip> Franklin's after a four-year hiatus, dropping a magnificent Morning Dew, and playing an outstanding, classic late-80s setlist. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Obviously the legendary “Formerly the Warlocks” show happened on this day. But there was historic precedent for the band billing themselves as something other than the Grateful Dead. Back in 1968, the boys - save Pigpen and Bobby who had been fired days before - played a set at The Matrix in San Francisco. Jack Casady and Elvin Bishop joined them, and a night of jamming goodness ensued. As Mickey explained, "We just wanted to play instrumental music; we didn’t want to play Grateful Dead music." Click on through and explore this intimate night of Jerry Garrceeah and His Friends, as the four remaining members and their various guests were billed.
Here we have fully remastered two-camera video of one of the Hampton 1989 shows billed as "Formerly the Warlocks." The whole show is amazing, but that second set with Help> Slip> Franklin's, Eyes of the World, and the closing Morning Dew is something else entirely.
