On a subdued but utterly fantastic evening on this day in 1973, the boys laid down a dark and noirish Sugaree, a jazzy and velvety Playin', and an utterly mind-blowing Dark Star. Joined by Martin Fierro and Joe Ellis, the Dead also played what is arguably the best Weather Report Suite ever. Listen to the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On Mickey's 39th birthday in ‘82, the Dead put up a masterpiece in South Florida. A sick Minglewood kicks off the action, and a frenetic, mesmerizing Let It Grow is the highlight of the early going. Yet it is the Scarlet> Fire that opens the second half that is the real gem of the evening. But don't sleep on the Sailor> Saint, masterful Terrapin, and rocking Truckin' out of Space. Celebrate Mickey and the Dead with this one!
On this day during the fall 1973 tour, the great saxophonist Martin Fierro joined the Dead on stage at William and Mary for what would be the first of all eight of the remaining tour dates. Read more about Fierro and his time wih the Dead in our bio over at Grateful Dead of the Day.
