Pre-Drums 1993 does not get much better than the show from this date as the boys go Scarlet> Fire> Playin'> Dark Star> Terrapin and kill it all. There are also a number of heady nuggets in the first set, including a sweet Jack-A-Roe and a tasty Let It Grow. Give the entire night from the mighty Spectrum a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On the outskirts of Austin in 1983, the Dead played a sensational second set, starting with a thirty minute Scarlet> Fire that is one for the ages. And the Spanish Jam is absolutely enchanting before a beautiful Wheel rises forth. Cue up this Texas gem.
A 1991 MSG treat: Lazy Cow's audience video and Christopher Hazard's incredible remaster. Take in the Althea, Bird Song, Scarlet> Fire, Other One> Stella> Throwing Stones> NFA, and all the rest.
In the shadow of the Sphinx and the Giza pyramids, the Dead began their Egypt run on this day with a lengthy soundcheck, and Don Defenderfer was there to take it all in. Listen to his tale of being at the Egypt shows.
