On this day back in 1978, the Grateful Dead finished their three-night run in the shadow of the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt. The great Nubian Egyptian musician and composer, Hamza El Din, played along with the band on Ollin Arageed, a song that he composed specially for the Dead's visit, taking it into a face melting Fire On The Mountain. Check out the show at Grateful Dead of the Day and imagine being there, listening to the boys with the Giza Necropolis in the background.
Starting out with a carnivalesque Rider, the Dead put an incredible shine on the Avalon on this day in 1966. The highlight of the show is an eighteen-minute Midnight Hour, featuring Pig bawling and rapping away, Jerry just tearing it up, and everyone creating a funky, high-energy acid-drenched Motown sound that was inimitably Grateful Dead. But every song on the night will flat-out floor you, not least the Dancin', Schoolgirl, and Baby Blue. Check it all out.
One of the absolute highlights of the magical Egypt trip - the Ollin Arageed into Fire On The Mountain - is caught on video right here. "Perfection personified." Watch all the action.
With a few good friends, Don Defenderfer traveled to Egypt to catch the Dead. And he got far more out of it than he bargained for. Listen to Don talk about the Egypt experience in this episode of Heads' Tales and continue reveling in the magic of the Dead’s Egypt trip.
