The whole show from this day in 1972 is heady as all get out, but the gem at its center is the He’s Gone> Other One. The He’s Gone is wonderful, priming your ears for the face-melting Other One. Then, from the first notes out of He’s Gone, you know that The Other One you are about to hear is going to be a raging cauldron of Dead brilliance. The boys get deep quick, laying in some fantastic, powerful runs. Then, Billy claims a masterful, ripping drum solo, capped off by Phil thundering in and unleashing. From there, the jamming continues unabated for a half hour as the band turns in a consummate Other One for the ages. Listen to this seething thing of beauty at Grateful Dead of the Day.
A languid and resplendent Sugaree and fantastic Looks Like Rain, along with a rare Donna cover of Loretta Lynn's You Ain't Woman Enough, all ragtime and piano-heavy, highlight the first set on this day in 1973. And Fierro and Ellis join the band for the second half, contributing mightily to a rambling fantastic jam at the end of Truckin', a jazzy and supremely mellow Eyes> WRS, and a rocking Sugar Mags encore. Give it all a listen.
