The boys reach mind-meld perfection during the MSG show from this day in 1987. Every lick, run, and noodle seems to be anticipated, even created, by every member of the band, making for some luscious, gooey goodness. The Bird Song and Morning Dew are absolutely epochal and the Good Lovin'> La Bamba> Good Lovin' is so much fun. But, really, just listen to the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
With Phil’s great bass, the precious rendering of the lyrics, and the absolutely entrancing guitar work from Jerry, the rare Uncle John's opener puts the French crowd on notice that this is, indeed, going to be a special night. An epic first set with incredible versions - Straw, FOTD, BTW, Scarlet - at every turn is capped by a heavenly To Lay Me Down before an exploratory, innovative, absolutely superlative Playin'. And, hey, the second half is not too shabby either with a silky smooth Eyes into a diaphanous China Doll and a mind-expanding He's Gone> Truckin'> Drums> Caution Jam> Ship of Fools. Give the best show from the Dead's 1974 European tour a listen.
Coming back around to that 1987 show, the Dead take a ripping Watchtower into a deeply moving Morning Dew as well. And you can check that and all the rest of the show out on remastered video.
