The Dead delivered a fitting tribute to Jimi Hendrix, who had passed away the night before, at the Fillmore East on this day in 1970. The Dark Star is a "beautiful wistful eulogy for their fallen psychedelic comrade," and the rest of the show, including an earth-shaking Not Fade Away that features a Darkness, Darkness and a China Cat jam, both of which are positively mind altering, is just as insane. The show at MSG on this day in 1987 opens with a lustrous Half-Step and includes a magnificent Big River. But it is the second half, beginning with a mesmerizing Crazy Fingers before a Uncle John's into a Playin' In The Band that is an absolute feast of jamming virtuosity, the searching interstellar exploration continuing right through Drums and Space.
