On the last night of a monstrous week-long run at MSG in 1990, the Dead put on a mesmerizing show. A beautiful Ramble on Rose highlights the first set, going along with a great Stranger and Althea. The second half is sensational from top to bottom, but the Dark Star> Playin'> Dark Star is surely the crux of it all. Give the entire show a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
A Help> Slip> Fire makes this day's show from the Boston Garden in 1991 something particularly special. The transition itself is silky smooth as the dark and steamy Slipknot! rolls right into Fire on the Mountain, which is laced with Phil bombs, Bruce's piano, and Billy and Mickey's percussive tour-de-force. Jerry seems to be enjoying himself throughout as well, adding some righteous runs and, according to those who were there, grinning from ear to ear. The show also has a 15+ minute Bird Song and sensational Watchtower> Morning Dew along with more than a few other treats. Check it all out.
This audience shot classic captures the Dead peaking at Madison Square Garden, their erstwhile East Coast home, back in 1988. Take it all in on the complete show video over at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Edie Brickell and Jerry had talked about going out on the road with an improv band. Unfortunately, that never came to pass, but she did sit in with the Dead on this night in 1993. Read more about Edie Brickell's relationship with Jerry and the Dead and check out that '93 show.
