On this day in '76 the Dead invaded the campus of William and Mary and turned in another command performance. The only Playin'> Supplication> Playin' ever is mind-blowing, there is a ridiculous Help> Slip> Drums> Slip> Franklin's, and Bobby gives what might be the best Take a Step Back ever, for those who are keeping track (and aren't we all?). Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
In front of 80,000 at the Cuse's Carrier Dome on this day in '82, the Dead finished the first set on a tear with a beautiful, kaleidoscopic Bird Song that spills into a lovely Looks Like Rain before a fervent, high-energy China> Rider. The second half includes a sublime Playin'> Crazy Fingers and an Iko> Truckin' - with a Playin' tease - out of Space that is so much fun. But the highlight of the night might have been the luscious Brokedown encore. Take it all in.
The camera is shaky, but this footage from the early fall William and Mary Dead show from this day in 1976 is a sacred relic. Watch it now.
Happy birthday to Emilio Castillo, the long-time tenor sax player for Tower of Power. Read more about Tower of Power and listen to their time as guests with the Grateful Dead.
Despite a lengthy, impressive career, Suzanne Vega still believes "nothing tops jamming with the Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden" on this day in 1988. During a rainforest benefit that the Dead organized, she joined the boys for three songs, including a little jam with Jerry and Bobby on Robyn Hitchcock's Chinese Bones, which the Dead only played that one time. Read more about Vega and the Dead, including Jerry's thoughts about the contemporary folk star, and listen to that ‘88 show when Vega joined the boys.
