Sorry about the late arrival this morning. And thanks for reminding me to get the newsletter out. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!
The Dead only played four shows during their 1975 hiatus, but all of them smoked, including the one from Golden Gate Park on this lovely late September day. At one point, the boys steer a marvelous Truckin’ into a blistering jam before slowing things up just a notch while Phil rains down a series of bombs and Jerry streaks around. A bit later, a face-melting Stronger Than Dirt emerges, transitioning into a rapturous Not Fade Away. And for anyone who disses Donna, just listen to her impeccable vocals throughout. Turn the show up loud over at Grateful Dead of the Day.
With Bruce and Vince now in the band, the boys took to Club Front to nail down a few tunes before setting off on their 1990 European tour. The music from this session is cool, but what really makes this recording special is all the banter, including lots of interesting technical discussions and ever-present joking. Just for instance, Bruce asks early on "Just what is a Saint of Circumstance?" and Jerry cracks wise about Bobby's inability to play his own song, before Bobby retorts “Well, I am singing, so I got a lot to think about.” Check out the Dead relaxing and having fun while they work through Saint of Circumstance and Bruce's Stander on the Mountain and Valley Road.
