Over 25 shows back in 1980, the Dead played an acoustic and two electric sets each night, recording for Dead Set and Reckoning. We catch up with them in the 5th night of the 15-show run at the Warfield when they delivered, arguably, the best acoustic set of them all. The playing is flawless from the opening On The Road Again through the set-closing Ripple as Jerry and Bobby offer rhapsodic picking and similarly emotional and spirited vocals throughout this transcendent set. And there are a few gems in the latter two electric sets as well, especially as Brent gets cooking on the keys. Give it all a good listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Sometime in August 1971, Pig entered the hospital. While Pig would rejoin the band on stage in December, the gravity of his medical situation forced the rest of the members to finally confront their need for a new keyboardist. And, right at that moment, when Jerry was playing a gig at the Keystone, Donna, as she explained, “grabbed him and said, ‘Jerry, my husband and I have something very important to talk to you about....Keith's your piano player, so I want your home telephone number so I can call you up and come to the next Grateful Dead practice.” Incredibly, that worked, and Keith and Jerry jammed a week later, which led to Keith joining the band. In order to prepare for the upcoming fall tour with their new keyboardist, the Dead put in a number of practice sessions, including on this date. Check out one of the first extant recordings of Keith with the band and read more about how it all went down.
What we have here is a rousing pro-shot Iko from Shoreline with Bobby smiling, Brent on the keys, and Phil bombing away. Take it all in at Grateful Dead of the Day.
