On this day back in 1979, the boys played one of their magnificent 52 MSG shows. This one is no slouch with a fiery, ranging, and deeply fun first set and a classic Scarlet> Fire> Estimated> Eyes in the scorching second. And that is not to mention the crowd (which may or may not have included crazy bunnies), which was way into it. Listen to the show and read all about it at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day in '82, you could have woken up to "Breakfast in Bed with the Grateful Dead," at Steve Wozniak and Bill Graham's US Festival. The crowds baked in 110-degree heat to see three days of music, including The Ramones, Kinks, and Talking Heads. But the boys converted everyone to Deadheads on the last day with a set as crisp, bright, and refreshing as the morning sunshine, beginning with a Playin'> Shakedown> Minglewood for the ages. Read more and listen to the set.
The video might be shot from far away and includes some jerky zoomed-in pans courtesy of the 1985 technology, but it sure is sweet to see the boys in all their glory at Red Rocks. Thank you Andrew Tatkow for capturing this incredible show. And thank you Christopher Hazard for working your magic as you remastered the original. Take it all in, and you will be thanking them too!
On this day in 1957, Viking Press published the first edition of Jack Kerouac's Beat classic, On The Road. The book and the image of Dean Moriarty, the main character based on Neal Cassady, helped inspire the counterculture and the Grateful Dead. Celebrate the publication of this great American novel and read more about Cassady at Grateful Dead of the Day.
