Vince Welnick joined the Dead on this day in 1990, welcomed by fans holding up Yo Vinnie! signs. He could light up the keys, brought back Here Comes Sunshine, and loved the Dead and us Deadheads as much as anybody ever did. Read more about Vince at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Dead rocked Red Rocks once again on this day in 1985, sending out a sweet first set, highlighted by Dupree's. But it was the second set that made the night really phenomenal, opening with Shakedown and breaking out Hey Jude in the midst of Dear Mr. Fantasy before a scorching Truckin'> Comes A Time> Lovelight that is just so satisfying. Give the entire show a good listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Fifty-odd years ago today, you could have been enjoying the Grateful Dead jamming with Jefferson Airplane at the Family Dog. A raging Johnny B. Goode and proto-punk Peggy Sue are some of the highlights. But the best might be a cover of Safari's Wipe Out, which the drummers charge off on after a request from the audience. Eventually the rest of the band catches up, including Jerry, who delivers some pealing Dick Dale licks. Give the show a listen!
Check out Vinny's first show in this remastered audience shot video from the Richfield Coliseum.
