A very happy birthday to Pigpen! Get your hands out of your pocket, head over to Grateful Dead of the Day, and celebrate Pig coming into the world by listening to some of his greatest performances and reading more about the man who Jerry called the heart and soul of the Grateful Dead.
On this day in 1973, the boys debuted the full Weather Report Suite in stunning fashion, following it up with a punchy Roll Out the Barrel before seeing out the first set with an epic Eyes and China Doll. But all of that might be eclipsed by the magisterial He's Gone on what would have been Pig's 28th birthday. This is a show for the ages.
On this day in 1991 at MSG, a spirited Touch opens the action, and the momentum builds throughout the first set, culminating with a plaintive, mesmerizing Row Jimmy and an outstanding Let It Grow. The second half of the evening, as it is so often, was when the sparks really started to fly, though. The Eyes and Saint into Drums by way of a Dark Star jam has some truly transcendental moments. Later, with Phil bombing away, The Other One gathers and takes hold, eventually heading into a solid Wharf Rat before a welcome breakout of Attics see out the night. Listen to it all.
